Leadership in medicine grows from experience, and some of the most formative experiences happen away from one’s own classroom. Individual leadership development at Sechenov makes use of this: students in the Leaders in Health Innovations program are encouraged to take part in international conferences, internships and seminars as part of their professional growth. Each format builds a slightly different set of skills.

Conferences: learning to speak to a wider audience

At a conference, a student sees how researchers from different backgrounds present, question and challenge one another. Presenting one’s own work in such a setting is a demanding test of clarity. The university treats scientific communication as a skill to be developed, and conferences are where it is put into practice. They also train a habit every leader needs: listening carefully to objections and responding to them calmly.

Internships: seeing other ways of working

Internships expose students to new teams, routines and approaches to care or research. Additional internships are part of the individual development tracks offered in the program, together with an extended choice of disciplines and master classes. The value lies in comparison: seeing how others organize their work sharpens a student’s own judgment.

Seminars and master classes: depth in a focused format

Shorter formats allow students to explore a specific topic, from a research method to a leadership skill, in concentrated form. They are also a good way to meet faculty and researchers with experience of international collaboration.

Turning experience into leadership

Events matter most when a student reflects on them. Curators and mentors help students connect what they see abroad or at conferences with their individual development plan. Over six years, this builds the confidence to make decisions under uncertainty and to lead teams, aims the program states explicitly.

Keeping expectations realistic

The program page does not list specific events, destinations or timing, and opportunities may depend on each student’s individual track. Questions about what is currently available are best put to the program team. When asking, mention your interests and the stage of your studies so the answer can be specific.
